MainDays 2018

The philosopher Heraclitus was famous for his insistence on ever-present change as being the fundamental essence of the universe. His beliefve that ‘nothing endures but change’ could be taken for the key theme of this year’s MainDays, the established annual maintenance conference in Berlin.

Numerous presentations and discussions focused on what the future of maintenance will look like and how companies prepare to get fit for the digital transformation. Topics such as the effects of digitization on humankind, machine and process and what it means for technology and maintenance, were highlighted, as well as how the necessary cultural change can be initiated and supported. The use of mobile, augmented reality, drones and BIM for predictive maintenance and inspection was discussed as well as the shortage of qualified workers and how it can be addressed for future workplaces.

Maintainer Award 2018 honors web-based knowledge portals

Another highlight of the conference was the ceremony of the prestigious Maintainer Award. It doesn’t come as a surprise that many of this year's applications were focused on data analysis and knowledge management. Due to the high quality of entries it was a challenge for the jury to make a decision. In the end two2 of them stood out due to their focus on user-friendliness, practicality of the solution and the fast implementation of the tools.

Evonik Technology & Infrastructure GmbH won in the category Excellence in Maintenance & Technical Service with a web tool for visualization of maintenance and service operations. The maintenance monitor, which is designed as a "one-view" dashboard, gives system operators a fast and accurate overview of all pending maintenance, service and inspection processes as well as their status and documentation. The user interface is, Tthe program, which regularly receives updates from the SAP system of Evonik's Technical Service, is located in the cloud and is thus retrievable regardless of location. Three-stage model for the introduction of augmented reality

The Maintainer Special Prize for Innovation was awarded to InfraServ GmbH & Co. Knapsack KG for the implementation of a "video wiki" that serves as the first step in a three-step model for introducing augmented reality.
Based on the insight, that the technological change is providing ever greater challenges for the work environment and increased complexity of processes and technical structures, a platform was developed that enables employees to save and document their knowledge in one central location, to support each other via video if required.

The agile project approach resulted in great team spirit with high degree of development autonomy, but also in a fully functional app that was available for employees within less than 8 weeks.
